The ecological significance of toxin production by Pseudomonas syringae pv. Tabaci in soil and rhizosphere

Pseudomonas Syringae pv. tabaci is the causal agent of the wildfire disease of tabacco (Nicotiana spp.). it produces the clhorasis-inducing tabtoxin. The main aim of this research was to identify the role of tabtoxin production in the ecology and survival of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci, in natural environments. Experimental approach of this problem involved a comparison of the growth in soil and in the rhizosphere of wild-type strain of pv. tabaci (tox+)with mutant that did not produce tabtoxin (Tox-). These strains are suitably marked with antibiotic resistance. The Tox+ strains had no significant advantage over the Tox strain in sterile soil, and in the rhizossphere.
